Gravitational Lensing by Nearby Clusters of Galaxies

چکیده
We present an estimation of the expected number of arcs and arclets in a sample of nearby (z < 0.1) clusters of galaxies, that takes into account the magnitude limit of the Visiting Astronomer at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. CTIO is operated by AURA, Inc. under contract to the National Science Foundation.

We present two weak lensing reconstructions of the nearby (zcl = 0.055) merging cluster Abell 3667, based on observations taken ∼ 1 year apart under different seeing conditions. This is the lowest redshift cluster with a weak lensing mass reconstruction to date. The reproducibility of features in the two mass maps demonstrate that weak lensing studies of low-redshift clusters are feasible. Thes...
متن کاملDetermining Tangential Peculiar Velocities of Clusters of Galaxies Using Gravitational Lensing
We propose two new methods for measuring tangential peculiar velocities of rich clusters of galaxies. Our first method is based on weak gravitational lensing and takes advantage of the differing images of background galaxies caused by moving and stationary gravitational potentials. Our second method is based on measuring relative frequency shifts between multiple images of a single strongly len...
متن کاملFrontier Fields: High-redshift Predictions and Early Results
The Frontier Fields program is obtaining deep Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope images of new “blank” fields and nearby fields gravitationally lensed by massive galaxy clusters. The Hubble images of the lensed fields are revealing nJy sources (AB mag > 31), the faintest galaxies yet observed. In this paper, we present high-redshift (z > 6) number count predictions for the full program and cand...
متن کاملDiscovery of Strong Lensing Clusters in the Sdss Dr6
We discovered strong gravitational lensing in 4 galaxy clusters by visual inspection of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images in Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). Two of them show the Einstein rings, and the other two show tangential giant arcs. These arcs or rings have large angle separations of > 8 from the bright central galaxies. The lensed images in general are bluer than cluster member galaxies. T...
متن کاملDetermining Gravitational Masses of Galaxy Clusters With (1)Virial Equilibrium And (2)Arc-like Images
The mass derived from gravitational lensing reflects the total mass contained in the lensing system, independent of the specific matter contents and states. A comparison of the dynamical masses from hydrostatic equilibrium with the gravitational masses from arc-like images of background galaxies is made for four clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshits. It is found that virial analysis has...
